Welcome to the UNIFUND Project

The Sydney University Tamil Society (SUTS) established the `Unifund’ project in 1991, following a request from former Vice Chancellor of the University of Jaffna, Prof. Thurairajah. This was a project to help the disadvantaged university students by University Students in Sydney. The Australian Society of Graduate Tamils (ASoGT) took over the project in 2002. This project bridges the University Tamil students in our homeland and students in the Tamil Diaspora.

Our Future Projects

Establishing an E-Library for UOJ. Online teaching and resources are vital now and in the future. The universities are now widely using `tablet’ device such as iPad for regular teaching, research, and to submit their assignments, thesis and tutorials. The new technology is paramount for faster and better future, to share vast amount of information in their fingertips.

EVENING TEA WITH UNIFUND’

Since the inception of the new Unifund project in July 2009, the Unifund project sponsors 90 students in the University of Jaffna and the Eastern University. The Unifund project has contributed Rs. 3.5 million as sponsorship for the disadvantaged students in a year. The Unifund project now has 41 individual and 5 group sponsors.

The Unifund project organised an `evening tea’ to thank our sponsors on the 19th September 2010 at the Reg Byrne Community hall, Wentworthville. After Tea, coffee and short eats were served to the guests; the official session began at 4.30PM with a minute silence for victims of civil war in Sri Lanka. Dr. V. Manomohan chaired the session and presented a power point presentation about the Unifund project. Mr. P. Arulananthan (Unifund member) described the opportunity he had to meet many of the sponsored students and University officials in Jaffna. New Sponsorship Program (since September 2009)

Following the requests for financial assistance from Vice Chancellors of both University of Jaffna and Eastern University in September 2009, we recommenced the service of the Unifund project in order to provide financial support for university students from Vanni region, who lost their parental financial support. The Unifund Project initiated with sponsorships for 41 students from Jaffna University and 2 students from the Eastern University in September 2009. The Unifund project pays Rs. 4000.00 per student, per month from September 2009. Later we added 20 students from the University of Jaffna and 2 more students from the Eastern University. The Australian Medical Aid foundation (AMAF) sponsors 25 medical students in association with the Unifund project. An above knee amputee is also our recipient. He is a medical student who lost his legs in intense shelling in 2009 Vanni war.
Following extensive consultation, we decided to sponsor the students through the Vice Chancellor’s office (Treasury) by using `Vice Chancellor’s Fund’. The VC’s office will select eligible students and maintain the documentation. They will inform us and review the sponsor program periodically. The VC’s office will inform us about the students’ graduation, in order to redirect sponsorship for new needy students. We will arrange communication between students and sponsors in order to have better understanding.

The Unifund project already contributed Rs. 2,000,000.00 (2 million rupees) in order to provide financial assistance and other needs of the students. There are over 30 individual sponsors and groups that support the students from this end. The Australian Tamil Senior citizens’ association (NSW), Tamil Seniors association of ACT and St. Brigets Alumni Association provide sponsorships to the University students through us.

The Unifund project provide the following Services:

    • Financial assistance to disadvantaged students in the University of Jaffna and the Eastern University.
    • Providing necessary medical and psychological support to needy students
    • Through the University, we arrange special classes for English language and computer skills.
    • Assisting an able family member to start a small business or job to support the family (Micro Economy). Further fund is either provided by the Unifund project or other NGO’s (such as World Vision).
